Manufacturing excellence in Telford
Following a tough selection process, two Telford companies have been selected as finalists in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' (IMechE) prestigious Manufacturing Excellence Awards 2003.
Alvis Vickers Limited manufacturers of armoured fighting vehicles, and
GKN Wheels Telford, produces steel wheels for agricultural & industrial tractors & off-highway vehicles.
The awards are designed to encourage and reward high standards and innovative working practices in UK companies, while setting a benchmark for running successful and competitive businesses.
John Ling, IMechE Technical Manager, comments, "It is extremely impressive that two companies in close vicinity have been chosen as finalists, and reflects the commitment to manufacturing in the area. We are now at a critical stage of the competition where the judges are visiting these companies for validation of their working practices compared to their application details. I wish all the finalists the very best of luck."
Charlie Blakemore, Operations Director, Alvis Vickers Limited, said, "We are extremely pleased to have been selected as one of the finalists as this provides recognition of the effort and commitment of the whole Alvis Vickers workforce and in particular, the Operations team.
Tony Lindsay, Director and General Manager of GKN Wheels Northern European Operations, said "We are delighted to be finalists in this leading competition. It is an acknowledgement of the commitment from the 200 employees at Wheels Team in Telford. Their achievements over the last three years show that by using proven tools and techniques we can take world best practise to the front line.
"Our journey to achieving World Class Excellence is based on five key deliverables: Quality, Speed, Cost effectiveness, Safety and Employee Moral. One measure of our success is to be nominated for this award."
